From Molecules to Consciousness: Philosophy and the Natural Sciences in Dialogue

Scientists traditionally use self-report questionnaires to assess the subjective effects of psychoactive drugs in the lab and determine how these effects relate to neuroimaging data. I will suggest that such questionnaires have important methodological limitations, but can be effectively complemented by semi-structured interviews. I will illustrate this claim with recent data from a neuroimaging study of the effects of the serotonergic drug N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, and draw upon this example to discuss the usefulness of philosophy for the natural sciences.
