What Is Minimal About Minimal Phenomenal Experience?

Abstract

Minimal phenomenal experience (MPE) has been defined as “the simplest form in which a state can be phenomenally conscious” (Windt 2015) or “the simplest form of conscious experience” (Metzinger 2020). These definitions assume that MPE scores on the lower end of a scale that measures the simplicity/complexity of conscious experiences. However, it is not immediately obvious what kind of property of conscious experiences such a scale would actually track. In this presentation, I will review several possibilities, and discuss their implications for theoretical and empirical work about MPE.
